Hi, I’m Guitao.

I’m currently a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Department of Computer Science at City St. George’s, University of London.

My research career has focused on control theory, optimisation, and intelligent systems, with particular interests in large-scale systems, stochastic systems, model predictive control, and geometric approaches to estimation and observer design.

Before joining City St George’s, I was a Research Associate (2025–2026) at the Wolfson School of Mechanical, Electrical and Manufacturing Engineering, Loughborough University, where I worked with Dr. James Fleming. Prior to that, I was a Research Associate (2022–2025) in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Imperial College London, working with Prof. Thomas Parisini.

I received my Ph.D. in Control Systems from Imperial College London in 2022 under the supervision of Prof. Thomas Parisini and Dr. Hamed Rezaee. Before that, I obtained an MSc in Control Systems (with Distinction) from Imperial College London in 2017 and a BEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (First Class Honours) from the University of Manchester in 2016.

I enjoy working with students who are curious, independent, and excited about research. Whether your interests lie in cyber-physical security, dynamic systems, or statistical learning, I believe the best research often begins with asking interesting questions rather than simply applying existing methods.

If you are interested in joining my group, I recommend reading a few of my recent papers before getting in touch. This will give you a better idea of the problems I work on and help us have a more meaningful discussion.

A strong mathematical background is certainly helpful, but I value curiosity, persistence, and clear thinking even more. I particularly enjoy working with students who are willing to explore new ideas and are not afraid of challenging problems.
